Homemade Classic Chicken Noodle Soup is always a hit at my house, but if I take an extra five minutes to whip up some homemade noodles, my kids are kissing my feet!
This meal is so simple (can be on the table in 30 minutes) and such a comforting meal on a cold winter night. The homemade noodles give it hearty-ness to help it pass as a meal. Don’t get me wrong. This recipe turns out great with store-bought egg noodles, too. Do whatever makes you happy! 🙂

I have a separate post with how-to instructions for the Five Minute Homemade Egg Noodle Recipe with lots of step-by-step pictures. Seriously, give them a try! If you have never made homemade egg noodles before, you will be shocked at how easy it is and how awesome it makes your Chicken Noodle Soup taste.
HOW TO MAKE CLASSIC CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP WITH HOMEMADE NOODLES
- In your favorite soup pot, saute onion, carrot, and celery in butter until fragrant. Salt and pepper while sauteing.
- Add chicken broth or stock, chicken, and 1-2 cups of water. Bring to a boil.
- If chicken is put in raw or frozen, allow soup to boil for 5-10 minutes before adding the noodles.
- Next, add noodles to boiling water and cook for 10-15 minutes.
- Add 1/2 tsp lemon juice and 1-2 tbsp parsley flakes if desired.
- Taste broth and adjust seasoning if needed. If soup needs more flavor, add salt, pepper, or chicken bullion. If the soup is too strong, add water.
Tips for Making Classic Chicken Noodle Soup with Homemade Noodles
- I like to keep pre-cooked chicken in my freezer and use it in soups. If I don’t have any, I just cut up a chicken breast and put it in when the water is boiling and make sure it boils for 15-20 minutes.
- You can use frozen chicken breasts in this recipe. Add them to the boiling water and boil for 20-30 minutes. Then, take the chicken out, shred it, and put it back in the soup.
- While the soup is coming to a boil, make the Homemade Noodles.
- Sometimes I throw in a handful of peas or frozen broccoli at the end to add more veggies.
cook’s tools
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 4-5 carrots, sliced
- 4 stalks of celery, sliced
- ¼ cup butter

- In your favorite soup pot, saute onion, carrot, and celery in butter until fragrant. Salt and pepper while sauteing.
- Add chicken broth or stock, chicken, and 1-2 cups of water. Bring to a boil. (I make the egg noodles while soup is coming to a boil.)
- If chicken is put in raw or frozen, allow to boil for 5-10 minutes before adding the noodles.
- Add noodles to boiling water and cook for 10-15 minutes.
- Add ½ tsp lemon juice and 1-2 tbsp parsley flakes if desired.

Just made a big batch with homemade noodles and it is AMAZING!!! Do you know if it freezes well?
Maria
I have never had good luck with freezing cooked noodles of any kind, but I have never tried these. They freeze great if you dry them out and freeze them separately. You could make the soup with everything but the noodles and then make a quick batch while the soup is heating back up, if you really wanted to keep some in the freezer.
I am so glad you liked the soup. I just made some tonight for a friend who isn’t feeling well and kept a bowl for myself. I could eat it everyday. 🙂

First of all “Are You Married” IF NOT………..LOL LOL LOL I’m sure your husband is so happy that he wouldn’t even think of leaving you alone. Your recipes are WONDERFUL!! Your website has a bit of a problem. When you bring up the soup page the Chicken Noodle Soup won’t come up BUT the Kale and Sausage soup is FANTASTIC!!! I DID find the Chicken Soup Recipe and have but one suggestion. I shop at Costco and they have both Chicken broth AND Free Range Chicken Broth. I think Pacific Foods make it for them and it will bring your soup up a notch. Another product I buy there is “Better Than Bouillon Reduced Sodium Chicken Base” It IS ORGANIC and will send your soup OVER THE HILL!!!
I DID try your Bread and I also added some finely minced crushed Garlic [God’s gift to mankind for being sooo good} and that turned out really good.
Thanks for bringing such fine recipes to me and the older folks that I take it to [they LOVE to sample my cooking]. Someone has to help them as the goverment sure doesn’t.
ONCE AGAIN THANKS
Bruce

And keep up all the kind food sharing, those older people are lucky to have someone as kind as you looking out for them.
Take Care!

This chicken soup recipe is a keeper! Everyone really liked it. There was only one serving leftover. I used chicken bullion and water instead of the chicken broth along with the homemade egg noodles recipe.

I need to move this soup to another location and use a crockpot. I need to make this soup today and it will be moved tomorrow. I will not have time to add the noodles tomorrow as we’re leaving early in the morning. Any suggestions to help make this successful?
Maria
