Trade the expensive take-out meal tonight for Easy Beef Broccoli with Ground Beef. Being very similar to my Korean Beef Bowls–which is always a hit with the kids–you can add more carrots and broccoli, and kids will gobble it up just as quickly and happily. Trever asked, “Mom, isn’t there any more of this?”
Put the rice in the rice cooker, make the stir-fry, and before you know it dinner is on the table in about 30 minutes. Cutting the broccoli into bite-size pieces will help it to cook quickly, and kids are always happy to eat vegetables that are in smaller pieces. I used the larger side of the grater for the carrots because I thought it would work better and not overcook them. Carrot sticks also work great in a meal like this. If you have picky kids, cut the veggies on the small side to help them disappear into the meat.
Give this super simple weeknight skillet dinner a try. Not only is it delicious, it’s healthy for you, and kids love it.

Frequently Asked Questions about How to Make Easy Beef Broccoli with Ground Beef
Can I use frozen broccoli?
If you don’t have fresh broccoli, frozen will work. Ensure the broccoli is mostly thawed and cut into smaller pieces before adding it to the skillet.
Do I need to use sesame oil?
The sesame oil gives it the flavor of a beef broccoli Chinese dish. It’s okay if you don’t have sesame oil, but you might be disappointed in the flavor if you don’t use it.
Do you recommend using a food processor to chop up the vegetables?
If you want the veggies to be tiny and disappear into the hamburger, yes, use a food processor. You can even throw the garlic cloves in the food processor with the veggies. When I make Korean Beef Bowls, I use a food processor to finely chop the veggies.
Will a yellow onion work in place of the green onions?
Yes. If you don’t have green onions on hand, you can substitute 1/2 cup diced yellow onion in their place.
Does the sriracha make it spicy?
This recipe has a kid-friendly spice level. Using 1 tsp sriracha hot sauce does not add much spice. If you like spicy food, you can add more sriracha or red pepper flakes to the sauce.
Chef’s Tools:
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 lb broccoli, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1-2 cups shredded carrots
- 3 green onions, thinly sliced (or ½ cup diced yellow onion)
- 5-7 cloves of garlic, crushed
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp sriracha hot sauce
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp beef bouillon
- ¾ cups water
- In a large skillet, brown the hamburger meat.
- Next, add the green onions, crushed garlic, and grated carrots. Cook until the onions and garlic are tender, and then add the broccoli.
- In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the remaining ingredients. Pour the sauce over the meat and broccoli mixture and stir until it's all coated. Continue cooking the mixture, stirring occasionally until broccoli is tender. You can put a lid on the pan to speed this up, if desired.
- Serve over steamed rice.
- Enjoy!
