Buttery crunchy topping over perfectly sweet and tart apples. It's delicious on its own but irresistible with a scoop of ice cream. A must-make this Fall.
Author: From my friend, Molly Oritz
Recipe type: Dessert/Seasonal/Apple
Serves: 6-8
Ingredients
4-5 large apples peeled and sliced (I like to use a variety of apples to get more depth of flavor.)
2 tsp lemon juice, fresh or imitation
¼ cup + 1 tbsp granulated sugar
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt
FOR TOPPING:
½ cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup old-fashioned oats
⅓ cup brown sugar, packed
½ tsp cinnamon
⅛ tsp salt (a few pinches)
½ cup butter, salted (If using unsalted, add another ⅛-1/4 tsp salt.)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees, prepare an 8x8 or 9-inch-deep circle dish with cooking spray, and set aside.
Place the sliced apples in the dish.
Next, sprinkle the lemon juice, sugar, flour, cinnamon, vanilla, and pinch of salt over the apples and toss to coat as evenly as possible. Set aside.
In a small mixing bowl combine the flour, oatmeal, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well and then add the butter (I like to cut it into smaller pieces), and mix it in with a pastry blender or your hands. You want the mixture to be crumbly but stick together if you press it together in your hand.
Once the topping is ready, evenly sprinkle it over the prepared apples.
Bake in a 375-degree oven for 30-40 minutes or until apples are fork-tender and the crisp topping is nice and browned.
Enjoy! Don't forget the vanilla ice cream.
