Swirled Cheesecake Brownies

Pinterest picture of slices of swirled cheesecake brownies with the text of the title at the top.

Have you ever had these brownies? I just love them! I got this simple recipe years ago from my sister, who got it from her Mother-in-law.

They are simple to throw together because the brownie base is actually a cake mix and the cheesecake ingredients are very basic things you probably have in your house already. Doesn’t everyone keep a supply of cream cheese lying around?

The bonus with this recipe is that it makes a large cookie sheet-full, perfect for potlucks or family gatherings. These Swirled Cheesecake Brownies are always a hit no matter where I take them.

Because the base is a cake mix, the brownies definitely have more of a cake-like consistency than the typical chewy, brownie mix, type brownies. The slightly dense and creamy cheesecake swirls are the perfect compliment to the cake-like brownie and if you are like me you will find yourself addicted to them in no time.

The generous amount of chocolate chips in the cheesecake layer doesn’t hurt anything either. SO YUMMY!!!!!

Keep these brownies refrigerated. They taste awesome cold and they will also cut much better and cleaner if you refrigerate them before cutting into them.
Recipe type: Dessert
Serves: 24
Ingredients
  • 1 German Chocolate Cake mix (Prepared according to package directions.)
  • 2 (8 oz) pkgs cream cheese, softened (Don't use low-fat or fat-free.)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1½ cups milk chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Spray a large cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  3. Pour prepared cake mix into sheet pan and spread evenly.
  4. Combine softened cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and chocolate chips. Mix well until completely combined.
  5. Make five lines of cheesecake filling length-wise on the cake batter.
  6. Using a butter knife drag it through the batter and cheesecake one direction and then the other width-wise until you have swirled the two together. (See picture below.)
  7. Pay close attention to the edges and make sure you evenly spread cheesecake layer so you will have it throughout the entire pan of brownies.
  8. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. (My oven took about 23 minutes.)

I’m a stickler for having a little bit of everything in each bite. 🙂 Follow along with this collage and they will come out perfect!!!

Enjoy!

This was an absolute mess. Too much cream cheese. The amount of this makes is more than the amount that the cake mix made. The brownies were extremely rich. I bake a lot and mostly from scratch. The toothpick never did came out clean. Although I baked them for 45 minutes. The mix did not set up. I tried this recipe twice, thinking I did something wrong. It was a flip both times. The cream cheese was at room temperature the first time and the second time I worked it and blended it to make sure there wasn’t any lumps, then let it cool to room temperature. Our temperature is the house is 73°. Will not be making this one again, unless I only do one pack of cream cheese and ¾ cup of chocolate chips.

Hi, Stephen. I’m sorry you had trouble with this recipe. We’ve never had this problem. What brand of cake mix did you use? What size of pan did you use? For this recipe, you need to use a large cookie sheet–an 18×13-inch/half-sheet size.
