 Easy Mongolian Ground Beef Bowls

A quick and easy dinner that is on the table in under 30 minutes, these Mongolian Beef Bowls are flavor-packed and a hit with kids and adults alike. Build your bowls with rice, savory ground beef, matchstick carrots, cucumber, Pickled Onions, grape tomato halves, and fresh zucchini pieces for a well-balanced meal. No sauce is needed on top because the meat is so flavorful.

Lately, I am pretty obsessed with making bowls. People can customize their bowl with the toppings of their choice, which kids love because they can add whatever they want. My kids usually surprise me with the toppings they add. Serving bowl recipes for dinner helps them to try new things, like a piece of pickled red onion.

Can I substitute the ground beef for ground pork or ground chicken?

Yes. They are both good substitutes for ground beef in this recipe.

Recipe type: Dinner/Asian/Quick & Easy
Serves: 6
Ingredients
  • For the Bowl Base:
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • ½ cup finely chopped green onions (5-6 whole green onions)
  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch fresh ginger, minced (approx. 1-2 tbsp)
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2½ tbsp brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes
  • Cooked Rice
  • Toppings:
  • Matchstick carrots
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Diced red onion or Pickled Onions
  • Sliced green onions
  • Grape tomato halves
  • Fresh zucchini, chopped
  • Sliced avocado
Instructions
  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil. If the ground beef is really fatty, you can skip the olive oil.
  2. Next, use a meat chopper to break up the ground beef and mix in the salt and pepper.
  3. Mix in the green onions, minced garlic, and minced ginger, and brown the ground beef.
  4. Once the mixture is browned, add the soy sauce, brown sugar, hoisin sauce, and red pepper flakes. Mix until well combined, and continue cooking 1-2 minutes to sear in the flavors.
  5. When the mixture is cooked through and seasoned, serve with rice and toppings.
  6. Enjoy!
