My husband loves to make waffles or pancakes on Saturday mornings. Also, it’s his thing, and I don’t mess with it. I don’t mess with it because I think it is great that he is cooking breakfast because Saturday is my sleep-in day. And let’s face it. I usually sleep right through breakfast. When I finally wake up, I eat up what’s left. And I have to say, he has really perfected his Homemade Whole Wheat Waffles recipe.
He tried MANY recipes. He wanted to find one that used only whole wheat flour and still tasted great. He ended up combining two recipes he found online, and the waffles turned out awesome. He has been making them this way ever since. They are perfect–Light and Fluffy and Delicious!

Tips for making Homemade Whole Wheat Waffles
- We use dry milk reconstituted in this recipe to help us rotate through our food storage.
- We also keep plenty of wheat in our food storage that we rotate and grind up for recipes like this one.
- If your waffle iron is new, you may need to spray it lightly with cooking spray before pouring the batter on it.
- These waffles freeze really well! Perfect for making ahead and pulling out later for breakfast.
- Serve with either of these two syrup recipes: Spiced Buttermilk Syrup or Brown Sugar Buttermilk Syrup.

These were excellent! Better than any other waffle recipe I’ve used – even the unhealthy ones!
Maria
Awesome! I am so glad you like them. Thanks for taking time to leave a comment.
Angel
Is there calorie info available by any chance?
Maria
I am sorry, I don’t have that info.
Kylee
For the entire batch it is about 3100 calories. If you serve 6 people it is about 500 calories a person before adding any toppings.

I have been looking for a whole wheat & low sugar waffle recipe. I tried many that just weren’t
right for various reasons. I’ve made these four times now & my girls love them. They freeze great too! Thanks for this healthy waffle recipe.
Maria
Yeah! I love this recipe so much too. It makes me so happy that it is healthy and still taste great! And BONUS it is sooo practical and easy!
Thanks for taking time to leave me a comment Sara!

Yes! My boys LOVE these waffles! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nancy
Just made these because my son had a crazy (wonderful) idea of waffles for lunch – they were a hit! I could not cook them fast enough! Only problem was, his sister, who was my assistant 😉 thought tsp was a tbsp on the SALT! (newbie cook) LOL so I had to quadruple all the other dry ingredients so we did NOT end up with salty waffles 😉 I made two batches into waffles and now I have two dry mixes for future use… I have a feeling they will be used rather soon and not so much “future”! 🙂
Maria
oh boy, I love a good, kid cooking, story! What a smart mom to quadruple the batch and save some as dry mixes! 🙂 I am so glad your family liked them. And yes, at our house they can never be cooked fast enough either. 🙂
Bri
These are so delicious!! My friend and I have been using the waffle maker I got for Christmas, and these are by far the best ever. I added nutmeg, cinnamon, and syrup from a jar of spiced apples. I actually wrote this recipe down in one of my books because of how well they turned out.
Maria
I am so glad you like them. Yum, I bet they were so good with that syrup! Thanks for taking time to come and let me know you tried them and liked them!

How many round waffles will this recipe make? ( traditional not belgian)
Maria
Hi Nancy,
I have a traditional round waffle maker too. And this recipe usually makes between 10 and 12.
Thanks for your question! Have a great day!
Maria
Stacy
Thank you so much for this recipe it was awesome. We have been looking for more whole food breakfast recipes and this was a hit with my husband and all three of the kids. They heated up wondefeully in the toaster over the next few days.
Maria
Yeah! So glad your family liked the waffles. I love love that they are all whole wheat flour and still taste great! Thanks for taking time to leave a comment.

Can you sub applesauce for the oil?
Maria
Yes Wendy, but it will change the consistency a little bit and they may stick a little more to the waffle iron. I usually only sub 1/2 the oil for applesauce when I do it that way and it works much better.
Katie
What kind of oil did you use? Can I use this recipe for pancakes as well?
Maria
Yes you can make pancakes with it as well, and I use canola oil or butter.
Ashley Seigman
I made these and my family LOVED them, but I felt a little guilty eating so much fat for breakfast with all the olive oil. (Good fat, I know, but still will make my jeans tight.) I subbed greek yogurt for half of the oil, and also used almond milk instead of regular. I didn’t stop there and did only egg whites and also used palm sugar instead of regular. Still EXCELLENT…my kids didn’t notice a difference, and now I get some to! Thanks for the recipe!!!
Maria
AWESOME! I love love love the yogurt substitution! Going to try that myself. 🙂
Pom Mom
Have used nonfat yogurt as oil substitute in other recipes. Am going to try substituting for half oil in this recipe too. Will let you know how it turns out!
Maria
Awesome, Can’t wait to hear how it turns out.
Kylee
Did you use nonfat Greek yogurt?
Carra
Cant wait to try this recipe. This is probably a silly question but when you freeze the waffles how would you reheat them? Microwave? And I don’t suppose you have the nutritional information to go with this recipe do you?
Maria
Hi Carra,
Not a silly question at all. I do reheat them in the microwave or sometimes in the toaster oven. The toaster oven gives it a nice little crunch on the edges. If you click on the little magic button under the recipe, it will take you to the nutritional info.

Maria these looks so yummy! I wish my husband would make breakfast on Saturday mornings! Lucky girl!
Maria
Thanks Amy, I know I am kind of spoiled. He is so funny though, he gets a little offended if I want to make them…it’s his thing now. 🙂
Samantha
My kids did not even notice these were made with whole wheat flour. I liked them and thought they were pretty good for being all whole wheat. I made a double batch so I could freeze some for weekday breakfasts. I think next time I will add some of the pumpkin I canned last fall. Overall a really good recipe.
Maria
Awesome! I have added pumpkin before and it works out well, I also throw in a little cinnamon and nutmeg when I do that.

We are making “breakfast for dinner” tonight. I’d like to try this recipe but with buttermilk that needs to be used up. If I wanted to use buttermilk, can I just substitute it for the milk, or should I make other adjustments to the recipe?
Maria
It should be fine to substitute the buttermilk….will probably just make them extra fluffy. If you want you could make the waffles the regular way and make this delicious syrup with the buttermilk. http://www.themotherhuddle.com/buttermilk-syrup-recipe/
Elizabeth
These were fantastic . I have been looking for a good waffle recipe using whole wheat flour and these were just perfect . Will be making these for my grandkids all summer at the lake . Thanks so much for sharing your recipe .
Cyndi
Made these for my husband and I. We did not like them. I was so disappointed because of all the good reviews.
Maria
Cyndi,
Sorry to hear you didn’t like them, sometimes the wheat flavor is an acquired taste. Thanks for giving them a try though.
Maria
Debbie
I loved the waffles but I always add more sugar or honey and a mashed banana even if I use a mix ( store box) and they always are great, . You do have to use the right whole wheat flour some brands are more denser of grainy. King Arthur is good I think I’m not sure as I through away my wrapper and stored it in a plastic container.
Britney
Thank you so much for this recipe! I made them for my 10 month old and he devoured them! I subbed 1/2c oil for 1/4 applesauce + 1/4 olive oil. We didn’t even use syrup or butter on them… I even got my picky husband to eat them! Thanks again!!
Maria
That makes me so happy! I will have to try it with Olive oil. Thanks for coming back and letting me know you liked them. 🙂
Nancy
My son loved the recipe so much. He could not tell that I used whole wheat flour. I substituted oil for extravirgin olive oil and vanilla for ground cinnamon. I skipped sugar altogether and added whole chia seeds and it was very fluffy, crispy and yummy. It has become our Saturday brunch every weekend. Thank you.
Nancy
Maria
Awesome! I love your substitutions choices. I will have to try adding Chia Seeds sometime, I am a huge fan of Chia seeds. Thanks for your kind comment. I am so glad your family likes them.
Maria
Carrie
This is my first attempt at waffles and they were amazeballs !! I can’t get the nutritional info though the link won’t work could u possibly give me it
Maria
Try it now. There should be a button under the recipe that says recipe magic or something like that.
Jessica
Hi I’m addicted to the eggo nutri grain whole wheat waffles iv’e been eating them almost daily for 3 years my friend suggest I start making my own and freezing them do you think these will be somewhat simillar? or do you have any suggestions? thank you
Jessica
Maria
Hi Jessica,
I haven’t ever tried the eggo’s you mentioned, but these do freeze well, If you reheat them in a toaster oven they should come out quite similar to the eggo version.
Maria
trish
this recipe is verbatim from the King Arthur website. How about giving credit?
Maria
Hi Trish,
My husband actually came up with this recipe after experimenting with different recipes on the web. He is the waffle/pancake man at our house. I would love to see teh recipe you are talking about. can you send me the link for the recipe on King Arthur so I can look at it. I just looked through their site at couldn’t find one that is like this. Giving credit when I know the source is important to me.
Thank you,
Maria

I’ve been craving waffles for a while now. When I get them in a restaurant they are ok, not great, not bad, just ok. I borrowed my MILs waffle iron yesterday and found this recipe last night. I don’t have to tell you how delicious they turned out, because you obviously know, but WOW.
I have never been so happy with a waffle as I was today. Thank you so much for this recipe. You made my day and satisfied my craving!
Michelle
Oh and I made a couple of modifications, if you can call them that, to your recipe.
I added 1/2 tsp (approximately because I did not measure it) cinnamon, omitted they sugar and salt and used soy milk instead of cow’s milk. I also used avocado oil. However the bones were your recipe and amazing it was!
Maham
I just made these and boyndidnthey come out perfect!!! THE BEST waffle recipe Inhave come across after trying soooò many!! Thank you!!
Maria
This makes me so happy! I feel the same way and want to shout from the roof tops that everyone should be making and enjoying these waffles. They are the best!!!
Sasha
I reluctantly only had whole wheat flour left in the house but was craving waffles. This recipe came up on google and after reading the reviews I made them and still have half a waffle on my plate but had to comment and just pinned and shared the recipe on Facebook. I WILL be making this recipe again and again! They are light and fluffy and so perfect paired with the peach lavender jam I made in the summer! THANK YOU for sharing this recipe and for breaking my whole wheat skepticism!
Maria
This makes my day! I love these waffles so much and LOVE that they are made with all whole wheat flour. I am thrilled that you made them and loved them too!
Jo
Can you use whole wheat pastry flour? If so, how would it change them?
Maria
Hi Jo,
I’m not sure, I haven’t ever used that type of flour. If it is like cake flour. You don’t need to change anything in the recipe and they should come out extra yummy!
Mag
Can this recipe be used for pancakes. My tweak was FF milk and little more sugar, stevia.
Maria
I haven’t ever tried it. The batter can sometimes be a little runny. You would probably want to add a little more flour.
Jerilee
Just made these and they are amazing! We’re always looking for recipes that use whole wheat flour and sometimes they bomb. This was an instant hit! Thanks for sharing!
Maria
Sounds like we would be good friends I am always experimenting with whole wheat flour in recipes. Have you tried my diner style pancakes? They taste delicious with whole wheat flour and I have so many more. There is a Brownie recipe that is Awesome. It’s called Crazy Good Whole Wheat Brownies on the site.
Rachel
Have made this recipe time and time again. We all love it-young to old. Best whole wheat waffle recipe….and we’ve tried many!
Maria
Yay! I love hearing this Rachel! We think it is the best too!

Pat Odoms
Excellent waffles. I added teaspoon of cinnamon only because I like cinnamon in my pancakes & waffles. Definitely will make this recipe again
Maria
Thanks Pat! Cinnamon is a great idea!
Monique J
These are perfect. I’ve made them regularly for my family for years now. Thanks for the recipe!!
Maria
Love hearing that Monique! Thank you for leaving a comment to let me know, I’m so glad you found the recipe and that your family likes it!
Kylee
I switched out the oil for whole fat Greek yogurt and they turned out great!! My son wanted pancakes instead of waffles, but they still turned out perfect. Great consistency, I didn’t even need to add more flour or milk. I did add honey and vanilla to sweeten them a little, especially since the Greek yogurt was unflavored (eew)
Ann@Real Life Dinner
Thanks, Kylee! Glad to hear the recipe worked for making pancakes.
Linda
Yum thank you.
Maria
You’re welcome!
