Homemade Whole Wheat Waffles

**Make sure to follow Real Life Dinner on Facebook and Pinterest so you won’t miss out on any fantastic recipes!**
Whole Wheat WafflesMy husband loves to make waffles or pancakes on Saturday mornings. Also, it’s his thing, and I don’t mess with it. I don’t mess with it because I think it is great that he is cooking breakfast because Saturday is my sleep-in day. And let’s face it. I usually sleep right through breakfast. When I finally wake up, I eat up what’s left. And I have to say, he has really perfected his Homemade Whole Wheat Waffles recipe.

He tried MANY recipes. He wanted to find one that used only whole wheat flour and still tasted great. He ended up combining two recipes he found online, and the waffles turned out awesome. He has been making them this way ever since. They are perfect–Light and Fluffy and Delicious!

Tips for making Homemade Whole Wheat Waffles
  • We use dry milk reconstituted in this recipe to help us rotate through our food storage.
  • We also keep plenty of wheat in our food storage that we rotate and grind up for recipes like this one.
  • If your waffle iron is new, you may need to spray it lightly with cooking spray before pouring the batter on it.
  • These waffles freeze really well! Perfect for making ahead and pulling out later for breakfast.
  • Serve with either of these two syrup recipes: Spiced Buttermilk Syrup or Brown Sugar Buttermilk Syrup.

Just made these because my son had a crazy (wonderful) idea of waffles for lunch – they were a hit! I could not cook them fast enough! Only problem was, his sister, who was my assistant 😉 thought tsp was a tbsp on the SALT! (newbie cook) LOL so I had to quadruple all the other dry ingredients so we did NOT end up with salty waffles 😉 I made two batches into waffles and now I have two dry mixes for future use… I have a feeling they will be used rather soon and not so much “future”! 🙂

Yes Wendy, but it will change the consistency a little bit and they may stick a little more to the waffle iron. I usually only sub 1/2 the oil for applesauce when I do it that way and it works much better.

I made these and my family LOVED them, but I felt a little guilty eating so much fat for breakfast with all the olive oil. (Good fat, I know, but still will make my jeans tight.) I subbed greek yogurt for half of the oil, and also used almond milk instead of regular. I didn’t stop there and did only egg whites and also used palm sugar instead of regular. Still EXCELLENT…my kids didn’t notice a difference, and now I get some to! Thanks for the recipe!!!

Cant wait to try this recipe. This is probably a silly question but when you freeze the waffles how would you reheat them? Microwave? And I don’t suppose you have the nutritional information to go with this recipe do you?

      Hi Carra,

Not a silly question at all. I do reheat them in the microwave or sometimes in the toaster oven. The toaster oven gives it a nice little crunch on the edges. If you click on the little magic button under the recipe, it will take you to the nutritional info.

It should be fine to substitute the buttermilk….will probably just make them extra fluffy. If you want you could make the waffles the regular way and make this delicious syrup with the buttermilk. http://www.themotherhuddle.com/buttermilk-syrup-recipe/

I loved the waffles but I always add more sugar or honey and a mashed banana even if I use a mix ( store box) and they always are great, . You do have to use the right whole wheat flour some brands are more denser of grainy. King Arthur is good I think I’m not sure as I through away my wrapper and stored it in a plastic container.
